Reviews for Grasshopper: Learn to Code

I am a 67 year old retired Surgical Nurse and need to learn a stationary job for physical limitations. I found your Grasshopper app and started exploring. I find it very interesting, fun learning and just challenging enough! It's easy to work with as I can repeat the exercises as many times as necessary for comprehension. I'll check back with any thoughts as I progress through the study. Thanks for this app! You may be responsible for my new career.

I love this app, the way it teaches you to code makes it enjoyable and fun, makes you want to learn to code. I love how it gives you clues, quizzes, how you are able to enter and make code run to test if you did right or not. Love the final exams, tests me on what I have learned gets me thinking and problem solving to come up with the correct answer. Has many levels. Love the sound everytime you get the answer correct. Wish there was a similar app for the other computer languages.

Coming into this with very, very little knowledge for coding (does html on myspace count?) I feel like I've learned so much already. I like the pacing of the lessons and how they build on each other. The interface makes it easy to use on mobile and feels like playing a game more than learning at times. I really look forward to completing the lessons and seeing how far it takes my knowledge. Great app!

Seems like an effective teaching tool, though it is a little restrictive sometimes (as far as letting you play with your code to see how things work). The interface with the phone keyboard is a little clumsy, but given that the phone keyboard was not designed for this kind of stuff at all, it makes the best of the situation. I've gotten farther in Grasshopper than I have with any other "learn to code" program, and that's no small feat.

I'm enjoying it so far, but there seems to be a design flaw in way you scroll through the input options at the bottom of 'your solution' code. It's nearly impossible to get it to settle on the last page without it flipping to the glossary at the end. Pretty frustrating. Otherwise, great little program.

So far, so good. Other coding apps I have tried teach you a tiny bit, then have a bug where you can't go any further. I kind of wish I had to type in all the formatting marks so that I will remember what they are. Aside from that, I have no complaints: the lessons are intuitive and engaging, and they are presented in small chunks that are easily digested in a few minutes.

I've learned more from this app than any other I have used. Why not a perfect 5 star review? I see this is an app that is centered on a person being busy and still wanting to learn, but what would make this app much better is to have many additional optional practice problems that a person could do just to help with remembering the newly learned skill. Repetition greatly helps with remembering, but make it optional because of all the skill levels of people on these courses.

I would give this 5 stars except that twice now it has refused to allow progress to the next lesson, (no error message or hint of what is happening, the next step simply never becomes available). I use this on a device that is rarely connected to the internet and discovered by accident that when i start the app at these points with an active internet connection it allows progress again. I dont know what sort of data mining is being done but a connection requirement should be documented clearly.

I think the app is well designed and encouraging, but it's not a good teaching/learning tool. It doesn't make the user think critically, it spoonfeeds answers and then says you've accomplished a much bigger task than you actually have. If I wrote an essay and had someone change a few commas to periods, I wouldn't say they then know how to write an essay, and that's what this app feels like it does.

It taught very well, but visually, this app was not very appealing. I wish it was more charming in the way it communicated with the user and had some more personality to it, but honestly, it was a forgettable experience for me, and I quickly lost interest in what I was learning. It was very good at teaching but lacked both appeal and charm entirely.
