Polarr: Photo Filters & Editor

Polarr Photo Editor is an image editing application. One of the best things about Polarr is its design. It doesn't look like regular Photoshop and is intuitive to use. With filters on the left and most of the tonal and color tools on the right, there are Lightroom tints, but it has a look of its own. After opening Polarr, the user immediately wants to use it.

One of the main features of Polarr is the histogram. It is better than any other that is in the editors. By default, it displays a color histogram that can be expanded into individual RGB histograms. When the crop isn't showing, it's helpful to see what your edits are doing to the image. The semi-transparent histogram can be dragged anywhere in the frame. Like most well-known editors, Polarr cannot open huge 16-bit files. You are limited to editing 8-bit JPEG files. It's good if the JPEG quality is high and hasn't been saved many times before.

The more limiting aspect of Polarr is that it exports everything in the sRGB color space. This may be a limitation of its encoding, but it is far from ideal if you want to print files on an inkjet printer. For web labs and online photo labs, this is fine. To mitigate the impact, it embeds a profile while maintaining, which some competing products do not. Polarr has one or two flaws, but it's still a deep program.

In Polarr, automatic enhancement is done with the Dehaze slider, and this tends to block shadows. Of course, you can tweak the result with shadows, blacks, and contrast sliders. Auto-Enhance works well with flat, blurred images and can create eye-catching results with a single click. Leaving the automatic settings and moving on to the manual settings, Polarr offers Lightroom-style color and tone controls (the latter is called "Light").

It has Temp and Tint sliders for white balance, but no auto white balance tool to surpass your vision. The Vibrance slider enhances the color without clipping. When adjusting the tone, Polarr offers sliders for highlights, shadows, whites and blacks that you move to achieve the full tonal range by observing the histogram (s).

This replaces adjusting levels. Whites and blacks correct large areas on either side of the midtones. Highlights and shadows correct only the brightest and darkest parts of the image.
