Reviews for Google Podcasts
I give it a five, i personal think the podcast app is a great app that gets me focused enough to do something i wanted or needed to tackle but have a hard time if i listen to music or maybe the tv or if i just have lots of noises in the background that makes it hard to focus on the task at hand. But if i listen to some episode of whatever on my earbuds or just somewhere in the background it helps with the focus. Not to mention it honestly cures my boredom.
This app works great for playing podcasts, but it is difficult to organize and it does not show parameters for what it presents as available to listen to, so you have to really scroll around to find specific podcast episodes. There is probably a way to make this easier but it is not intuitive. Other than that...it plays podcasts!
I really love how you can easily find podcasts and play them! I give it 4 stars however because I feel like they should add a few features! Like a button where you can click on the podcast and make all of the episodes unlistened to! I relisten to podcast episodes but I have to individually 'Mark as Unlistened' every episode otherwise it just goes like 10 seconds from the end and it just gets annoying. I also don't like the new ad feature built into the episodes but whatever.
Didn't want to like it. But, it is just too good. It works exactly the way I wished Spotify or iheart would. Unfortunately it seems pretty perfect and now I can't go back to the frustration of those other apps. Edit: there is a new problem downloading episodes. It spends the data to dnld the episode but fails red when I try to play it. To listen I must stream now. One Plus did force an update to my phone. Android 12? So that could have broken it.
Both good and okay, with a few tweaks, could be amazing. Would love to be able to change playback speed for each individual podcast. Some podcasts are better at 2.0 speed, others at 1.5 or even 3.0, depending on the speaker. Also, would love the ability to have playlists. Settings need option to change where podcasts are saved.
The current layout for navigating podcasts is horrible. They used to have podcasts categorized by type which made it very easy to browse and discover new podcasts. Now they have a clunky recommendation system which limits discovery and takes all joy away from browsing and finding the right next thing to listen to. Can't wait until this is eclipsed by a better app so that I can delete this from my phone, or they fire the product team that put forth this iteration.
Lots of small issues which add up to a lot. Marking multiple episodes played, podcast list import/export, individual episodes that are marked unplayed missing from lists . . . On and on and on. I keep coming back to check on improvements, but as Alphabet proves yet again, they don't care about their less profitable products. Much better apps out there that are also free.
No way to easily reset large groups to relisten to. That was just a minor annoyance but now I bought the new Pixel 6 and twice was listening to music and paused it when I un paused it my podcast started playing out of nowhere. The second time I force quit the app and it kept playing so I uninstalled it; And it kept playing. I removed the app and it kept playing. The ONLY way I could get it to stop was to power cycle.
I've used this on 4 different devices and it has never just worked. Not a single time. Not one single podcast listening experience went without multiple issues. The issues change but the frequency does not. Although, you should expect the download function to almost never work. That one stays, the rest change.
October 2020: Have it for a week now. So far, I'm very happy with it. Didn't even know that Google had a podcast player. EDIT: 6/21/2022. Two things caused me to stop using this google podcast player: 1). It forces the user to save the podcast files to your phone's INTERNAL memory, instead of giving you the option to save them to an inserted MICRO SD card. Saving to internal memory eats up your phone Memory, which can then quickly become critical. Not good. 2) Also, you can't keep files forever
